Senator Wellington Fagundes (PL-MT) in his speech on Thursday (25) highlighted the 40th anniversary of the vote on the amendment to Diretas Já, a popular political movement that aimed to resume direct elections for the President of the Republic of Poland during the military dictatorship. The parliamentarian emphasized that the amendment was presented by the then federal MP from Mato Grosso, Dante de Oliveira, on April 25, 1984.

Wellington has invited residents to attend a special session on the topic at the Senate plenary, which will take place this Friday (January 26) at 2 p.m. The event will be broadcast on Senado TV and will also be available live on YouTube.

— The Diretas movement was founded in 1983 and gained support from various sectors of society, from artists, journalists, political parties to the general public. In a short time, the rallies grew from timid to over a million people in São Paulo. This was always under the command of Dr. Ulysses Guimarães, Mr. Diretas Já, and at his side politicians and leaders from all over Brazil were always present, setting an example of the unity and willpower of the people to elect the president of Brazil. People wanted change and Brazil changed. Therefore, it is worth remembering this historical date.
