Will Young recalled the moment he got tongue-tied and blurted out nonsense when he met Julia Roberts.

The Falling Deep singer, 45, said he was still “sweating” as he recounted his conversation with the Pretty Woman star, 56, backstage at the LA Baftas several years ago.

Will squirmed as he recalled Julia 'just looked' at him after he made a 'weird' joke about Pop Idol, the reality TV competition he won in 2002.

Describing the encounter as horrifying, the Light My Fire pop star said the Notting Hill actress's assistant “pushed her away” and later commented on how much he was sweating.

Will regaled the excruciating exchange on Wednesday's The One Show, prompting awkward laughs from presenters Alex Jones, 47, and Jermaine Jenas, 41, and guest Imelda Staunton, 68.

'I was singing at the LA Baftas. She was in the dressing room and I was tongue-tied and I was looking at her and thinking, “Oh God, that's Julia Roberts” and all I had in my head was [hums the Pretty Woman theme tune].

'So she said, “You're the American Idol guy” and I said, “Not Pop Idol.” So I said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if it was called Pup Idol and everyone brought their puppies?”

'She just looked at me. I know. It's very weird. Her assistant just took her away. I'm actually sweating telling this story.

'I started sweating and the makeup artist said, “God, you're sweating so much.” And I said, “Yes, I know, I'm fine. It's so hot.

'It was just horrible. But I think people need to hear these stories.”

Will's honesty about his conversation with Julia comes after he revealed he still speaks to his late twin brother Rupert, who died by suicide in 2020, through a medium.

'I said I would see three mediums, then I saw two, so I have one more to go. Sometimes he tells me – and I'm a bit of a wizard myself and he was quite a wizard, so if there was anyone he could contact, it would be him – and some strange things happened.

He told Elizabeth Day in How to fail at podcastingthat he 'won't share' specific incidents, but spoke about how his brother told him to get back in touch with old friends.

'Sometimes he tells me to get in touch with other people, which is weird. Friends, old friends, so I have to call them and say “Rupert is bringing you into my dreams and are you OK?”

Will said Rupert often comes to him in his dreams and said he has 'visions' of his late twin.

'I have visions, often my communication with him comes in dreams and I wake up and think, “Oh, he came and bought it like an old friend.”

He added that his visions led him to seek out an old friend who was in need.

Will explained: '[There was one] that he bought for me recently and I was just checking with them and they weren't doing very well, so I said, “Very well, Rupert.”

The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One and iPlayer from 7pm.
