NEW DELHI: indian railways will begin the short-distance test Vande Metro Trains in July and the dormant version of Vande Bharat next month. Although Vande Metro trains operate on routes covering 100-250 km, the Vande Bharat sleeper trains will be deployed on routes covering more than 1,000 km.
According to officials, the Vande Metro trains would connect around 124 cities and some of the identified routes include Lucknow-Kanpur, Agra-Mathura, Delhi-Rewari, Bhubaneswar-Balasore and Tirupati-Chennai. it will meet the needs of passengers between major urban centers and satellite cities and will carry more passengers in the unreserved category.
An official said, “These trains are geared towards high accelerations with frequent stops. There will be 12 cars each and large automatic doors with side seats. There will be more space for passengers to stand. If there is a need to carry more passengers, these trains can also have 16 carriages.”
On the roadmap to modernize trains (rolling stock), the official said that the national transporter is targeting to operate 50 Amrit Bharat trains of push-pull variant in the current fiscal year, which will meet the demand of long-distance passengers at a cost very affordable. . The first such train was operated between Delhi and Ayodhya. These trains have a locomotive at the front and rear.
The official added that in the near future, Amrit Bharat trains will have a cone-shaped nose and will be similar to European trains. These will be implemented by 2026. Railways has planned to deploy around 400 of these trains in the near future.
