If you're looking for a premium mattress with all the best qualities, look no further than the Loom & Leaf mattress by Saatva. In addition to offering memory foam with an organic cotton top, it also offers cooling technology for hot sleepers. It's more expensive than a regular bed, but it requires all the extras. It's an excellent option for anyone looking for a firm memory foam bed, even if it's not the softest mattress.

Read on for my full Loom & Leaf mattress review, which includes its most significant pros and cons and who I think would appreciate it most.

First impressions

Just like its Saatva Classic sibling, the Loom & Leaf mattress has an inviting plush pillow and an elegant gold finish that wraps around the top and bottom of the mattress. If I didn't already know this was a luxurious mattress, I certainly would after looking at it for the first time.

I can tell right away that it's made with memory foam because of the slow-responsive, body-enveloping nature of the top layers, which gently pull you into bed. It's firmer than it looks and a little too firm when on my side. Still, it's a comfortable mattress that I see a lot of people liking.

Firmness

You have two firmness options: Relaxed Firm and Firm. As the names imply, these are not soft, plush mattresses. Here's how I would rate them:

  • Relaxed company: average company or 7 out of 10
  • Company: Company or 9 to 10

The Relaxed Firm model offers more pressure relief, while the Firm model offers the support you would expect. Remember, the heavier you are, the softer the mattress will be. For example, if you weigh more than 230 pounds, the Relaxed Firm model might feel like a 5 to 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Comfort

The Loom & Leaf mattress is about a foot thick and is stacked with more layers than a typical foam mattress. Here's a breakdown of each of its six layers.

  • At the bottom is a thick, dense piece of foam to help stabilize the mattress and provide most of the support.
  • Next is a 2-inch sheet of foam to act as a transition layer between the firm foam on the bottom and the softer foam on top.
  • In between is a 2.5-inch layer of dense, contoured memory foam to help give the Loom & Leaf mattress its unique feel.
  • Closer to the top of the mattress is a layer of gel memory foam with small perforations in the bed to increase airflow.
  • Next comes the cooling gel for the spine, which is only found in the central third of the mattress, under the lower back. Not only does it help regulate temperature, it also helps support your back and promote neutral spinal alignment.
  • The pillow top includes small layers of comfortable foam and has padding in the lumbar area, which gives more support to the torso region.

Compare this to the Casper One or Nectar mattress, which only feature three layers, and you'll see why the Loom & Leaf mattress is a premium foam bed.

To feel

The mattress has a dense memory foam feel because the top layers are primarily made of memory foam that hugs and molds. The pillow top layer helps counteract this sensation somewhat and makes the hair more responsive than beds like TempurPedic, but you'll still feel the foam gently envelop the contours of your body. Memory foam makes it more difficult to change positions because it takes a few seconds to return to its original shape.

Motion isolation

Memory foam is great for isolating motion, helping to keep you from feeling your partner tossing and turning, waking up to go to the bathroom, and so on. Remember the old commercial from the 90s with the woman jumping on the bed next to a glass of wine? This was memory foam, and so is Loom & Leaf. I don't see motion transfer as an issue on the Loom & Leaf if you share your mattress with a partner (or a pampered pet).

Edge support

The perimeter of the mattress is sturdier and sturdier than a regular foam mattress due to the dense memory foam and number of layers, but it's not as good as its sibling, the Saatva Classic mattress. Hybrid beds (like the Saatva Classic) naturally provide better edge support because the steel coils, as you can imagine, offer more support than foam.

Temperature

Memory foam beds without coils or cooling technology tend to trap heat because body heat is trapped in the dense foam of the mattress. The Loom & Leaf mattress is designed with multiple layers of cooling gels and foams to help promote a more comfortable temperature.

Who is it best for?

The Loom & Leaf mattress may or may not be best suited for you based on your body size and preferred sleeping position. Believe it or not, it matters.

Types of sleeper

Firm mattresses like the Loom & Leaf are typically better for back and stomach sleepers because the firmer the mattress, the more support it offers. Back and stomach sleepers need spinal support to prevent their back from falling into the bed, which is a major contributor to back pain.

Combination sleepers can probably get away with the Relaxed Firm model, as can side sleepers who weigh around 200 pounds.

Firmer mattresses are better suited for stomach sleepers as they support spinal alignment at night.

Body types

I normally recommend hybrid mattresses for people who weigh more than 230 pounds because all-foam mattresses will not be as long-lasting, durable, or supportive as a hybrid bed with steel coils. In the case of the Loom & Leaf, you don't want to spend so much money on a mattress that will expire prematurely. If you're over the 230-pound mark, consider checking out CNET best mattresses for heavy people.

People under 230 pounds should do well on the Loom & Leaf.

Price

This is where the Loom & Leaf might turn some people off: The average price for a foam mattress is around $750 to $850, but the queen-size Loom & Leaf mattress costs $2,395. Fortunately, Saatva offers discounts here and there, which can reduce the price of a Loom & Leaf bed by about $150. You can expect even bigger discounts from Loom and Leaf (and other brands) around major retail holidays, like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Testing, shipping and warranty

Saatva's shipping perks go beyond most other online mattress brands and offer a long sleep trial and warranty policy. Here's what you can expect when you buy a Loom & Leaf mattress from Saatva:

  • Free delivery and home setup
  • Free removal of your old mattress and base
  • A risk-free 365-night trial
  • A lifetime guarantee

It is not considered a bed-in-a-box and will arrive in its complete form and ready to sleep. Another advantage of this is that you don't have to deal with the off-gassing odor that often comes with opening a new bed in a box.

The final verdict

The Loom & Leaf bed is luxurious memory foam mattress for people with premium taste who need a firm bed profile. If you're also a fan of (or indifferent to) the slow, slimy feel of a memory foam bed, then Loom & Leaf might be the right choice for you. I'm impressed with how well it regulates temperature, the attention to lumbar support, and Saatva's generous mattress removal policy. Beds are hard to get rid of, so Saatva better do the dirty work for you.

Here's a simplified summary of who I do and don't recommend the Loom & Leaf bed for:

You might like Loom & Leaf if:

  • Do you sleep on your back, stomach, or a combination of both?
  • You love dense memory foam
  • You have a generous budget for your new mattress
  • You have an old mattress you want to replace (free mattress removal)
  • You weigh less than 230 pounds

You might not like Loom & Leaf if:

  • You want a soft to medium mattress firmness
  • Do You Need a Hybrid Mattress with Coils
  • You don't like the feeling of hugging memory foam
  • You are a sleeper and want to easily change positions
  • You are on a limited budget
