Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is said to be reviving his plans to film a biopic of iconic singer Frank Sinatra – with longtime actor collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio cast as the lead.

However, this casting announcement – along with suggestions that Jennifer Lawrence could play Sinatra's second wife, film actress Ava Gardner – was not well received by fans.

Oscar-winning director Scorsese, 81, had previously attempted to make a film about the life of one of America's most popular singers of all time in 2009, but ended up abandoning the project eight years later after failing to win. Sinatra's estate.

At the time, his chosen ones were Al Pacino and Robert De Niro to portray fellow Italian-American icons, Sinatra and fellow Rat Pack member Dean Martin.

Fifteen years later and DiCaprio – with whom Scorsese worked on films like Gangs of New York and the 2023 Oscar-nominated hit Killers of the Flower Moon – and Lawrence's names don't seem to be hitting the mark.

The duo previously starred in the satirical comedy Don't Look Up for Netflix, alongside Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett and Timothée Chalamet.

'Oh God, please no. Leo is a great actor, but Frank Sinatra he is not,” @TrigHappyTV posted about the news on Ava Gardner.

“Someone should tell Scorsese to audition or consider other actors. He has an obsession with DiCaprio,” Al Mere Yiheyis complained.

'I'm not really convinced by the casting, I don't see many similarities between Leo-Jennifer and Frank-Ava,' fan Elena added, and @RM4Justice stated: 'No. Sinatra is such a seminal figure and Scorsese such an A-list director that they could choose lesser-known actors who have more of the aura of Frank and Ava.

Others were also aware of the very important facet for anyone who wants to play a version of the My Way hitmaker on screen.

'Oh God, Leo could never be a blue-eyed old man… Does Leo even sing??' asked @JTS610.

Other names were put forward by fans, including Family Guy star Seth MacFarlane – who proved he has the flute – and actor Dane DeHaan and Mad Men star Vincent Kartheiser.

@CidRaines1 begged: 'Please leave Frank Sinatra alone.'

Others were more positive about the choices, with Rachael Pelligrini insisting: 'They will be amazing in Scorsese's hands. It will probably win the Oscar.

'If anyone can do it, Leo can do it,' shared Leo Bonner, while @MandyGerseygal commented: 'They're both great actors and Scorsese is a genius… They're going to need the best makeup artist in the business… It's going to be epic…'

It has now been reported that Scorsese plans to shoot the Sinatra film shortly after a film about Jesus, adapted from Japanese writer Shūsaku Endō's 1973 novel, which he will finance independently.

According to Varietythere are several studios interested in working with Scorsese on the Frank Sinatra biopic, but Sony is believed to be the favorite.

However, the publication claimed that the approval of Tina Sinatra, daughter of the singer who controls her father's musical and image rights, has not yet been guaranteed again.

Gardner is the woman who ended Sinatra's marriage to her and her siblings Nancy and Frank Jr's mother Nancy Barbato.

When Scorsese initially dropped out of the project the first time in 2017, he told the Toronto Sun that he couldn't get the rights holders to agree with his vision: “Certain things are very difficult for a family, and I completely understand. But if they expect me to do that, they can't hold back certain things.

'The problem is that the man was so complex. Everyone is so complex – but Sinatra in particular.'
