MANILA, Philippines — Although the National Bureau Investigation (NBI) was unable to bring former eastern black deputy Arnolfo Teves Jr. Back in the Philippines from East Timor, Department of Justice (DOJ) spokesperson Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano still considered his mission a success.

The DOJ is still awaiting the decision of the Timor-Leste courts on the Philippines' extradition request.

“What Operation was a success because when they arrived in East Timor – two hours after their arrival, Teves' arrest took place 'no. And returning home without it is not a failed operation,” Clavano said at a Palace press conference.

“Actually, it was a success. The sole responsibility of the authorities, especially the NBI Director, was to arrest him – so it was a success,” he added.

Clavano asked the public for more patience, as the agency must be thorough.

“We have taken every possible measure to achieve this and now we are at the end. When he returns to the Philippines, we hope he will summon the courage to finally face his charges in court,” Clavano said.

Teves is involved in the murder of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and nine other people in March 2023.

The expelled lawmaker eluded Philippine authorities until March 2024, when he was detained in East Timor while playing golf.
