Dehumidifiers typically work using condensation or desiccants, with condensation models being the most numerous and effective. Among condensation dehumidifiers, some smaller units can only be drained manually, where the reservoir tank must be removed and emptied periodically. (Most dehumidifiers shut off when the reservoir becomes full.) Many larger units are also built with the hose connection option, where the dehumidifier can drain continuously through the hose directed to a sink or floor drain. Although it relies primarily on gravity, some units also include a pump so that condensation can be directed upward to a sink for drainage.

When choosing a dehumidifier, it's critical to find the right size for your space.

Most dehumidifiers are rated according to their range, the square footage you can expect to dehumidify, as well as their volume, usually measured in how many gallons of water per day they can extract from the air. The typical range of mid-floor model dehumidifiers is between 1,500 and 4,500 square feet. The capacity is generally between 20 and 70 liters of water per day. Note that this capacity does not necessarily indicate the reservoir volume of a given model; To extract the maximum number of liters per day from air, the unit must be drained continuously using a hose or the reservoir must be drained manually whenever necessary.

As for the size of the dehumidifier itself, if you are trying to dehumidify a medium-sized room in your home (i.e. not a closet or bathroom), dehumidifiers will typically be placed on the floor and will take up a relatively large area. . The ones on this list are, on average, about 30 centimeters deep by 35 centimeters wide, with a height of about 60 centimeters. There are smaller units available that can be placed on a counter, dresser, or table, but these will typically only be effective for dehumidifying small, enclosed spaces and will have a significantly smaller capacity for collecting condensation.

In addition to range and capacity, you can consider a number of other features when purchasing a dehumidifier. Certain models have intelligence-enabled features, which means you can monitor and control them remotely when they're connected to your home's Wi-Fi. Models with pumps allow water to drain upwards, into a sink, without relying on gravity. A defrost function can be an attractive feature if you are operating your dehumidifier in a damp, cold environment. Dehumidifiers can also have a wide variety of controls, including timers, custom humidity settings, and multiple speeds.
