Korean pop quintet wins award for Best Global K-Pop Artist
K-pop sensations NewJeans performed “Super Shy” and “OMG” during the 2023 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday.
First appearing in a futuristic setting with pulsating lights that framed each of them in separate booths, the quintet – Danielle, Haerin, Hyein, Hanni and Minji – then moved to center stage, where they were joined by a bevy of dancers. to perform a fun “Super Shy” that was in tune with the song’s viral choreography. Meanwhile, Bunnies fans sang along to the song.
They left the side stage to return with some quick camera tricks that showed off costume changes as they entered another set where they launched into “OMG.” There, they danced on a white-walled stage complete with pulsating lights and cloud-like structures, where they delivered the track and interacted with the audience through waves and winks.
Following their performance, NewJeans won the new Top Global K-Pop Artists award, beating out Stray Kids, Tomorrow x Together, Twice and BTS’s Jimin.
“Thank you very much for giving us the award for best global K-pop artist,” Hyein said. Hanni added: “We were nominated in this category alongside incredible artists we admire. It’s an honor in itself. We are so grateful for this opportunity to perform at the Billboard Music Awards.” Minji and Haerin shouted to the Bunnies. “Words cannot express how grateful we are, but we hope that one day we can bring you as much happiness as you have given us,” Hearin said.
The fast-rising group has had a banner year, scoring their first US performance at Lollapalooza in August, where they also made history as the first K-pop girl group to play the Chicago festival.
