When Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) first appeared on Star Trek: Voyager, she wanted to return to the Borg Collective, and Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) refused to let her. As a part of the Collective, Seven of Nine had a role that she knew and understood. Commander Chakotay’s (Robert Beltran) brief neural link with Seven revealed her early childhood memories as a human girl named Annika Hansen prior to her assimilation. With such a strong connection to the Alpha Quadrant the crew of the USS Voyager called home, Janeway couldn’t in good conscience let Seven go back to being a mere drone.
