The One Show was thrown into chaos on Wednesday night when their guests couldn't join them on the sofa – because they were stuck in a lift.

Presenters Ronan Keating and Alex Jones would welcome Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith to the show to talk about their upcoming projects.

But in live TV's biggest mistake, they couldn't get them to set because they were stuck in an elevator.

Viewers were left confused when the pair performed music video after music video instead of welcoming their nominated guests – and eventually the presenters revealed why.

Alex said: 'We're spending the night here.

'Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith are on this sofa. Obviously it's a live show – they're stuck in the elevator.'

As Ronan began to laugh alongside her, she added: 'For now, let's watch a movie.'

Ronan added: 'And they're fine! They are absolutely fine. I hope they are here before the end of the show.

They then shared another video of Spencer Matthews taking a walk in the countryside.

However – when Spencer's clip ended and the camera panned back to Alex and Ronan, they revealed that they managed to get the stars out of the elevator.

Stephen joked: 'Santa's sleigh ride got a bit stuck. I think the reindeer were drunk.

The show must go on, and the hosts quickly turned the conversation to Stephen's recent unfortunate accident, which left him with a badly broken leg.

Stephen was speaking at an event at London's O2 arena when he fell from the stage 'onto hard concrete', 'six feet onto hard concrete'.

He broke his leg in two places and broke his pelvis, but thanks to medication and 'especially good physiotherapy' he is now on the mend and he will have his final X-ray this week.

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
