Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay had high praise for Washington Commanders sophomore quarterback Sam Howell ahead of Sunday's game between the 6-7 Rams and 4-9 Commanders at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
“Oh yeah, he's a football player,” McVay said of Howell during Wednesday's news conference, according to Myles Simmons from Pro Football Talk. “This guy has the ability to create. You can see that he sees the pitch well. Can move through progressions quickly. He can make all the throws. He quickly analyzes and recognizes the contours of coverage and is able to pass the ball accurately. “And then when things go off schedule, he has the athleticism and the ability to escape to buy time, he keeps his eyes on the field and you can tell the guys understand how to work with him.”
According to ESPN According to the stats, Howell enters Week 15 of the NFL ranked 22nd among qualified players with an adjusted QBR of 47.9 and 23rd with a season passer rating of 85.6. He's fifth with 3,466 passing yards and ranks 14th with 18 air touchdowns, but nobody he made more interceptions than Howell (14) in the first 14 weeks of the campaign.
The 23-year-old leads the league with 335 passes and 509 pass attempts.
It is widely believed that Washington will move on from head coach Ron Rivera when the NFL's “Black Monday” arrives next month. Associate head coach and offensive coordinator Eric Bujemy may emerge as a leading candidate to replace Rivera, in part because of Bujemy's working relationship with Howell.
“[Y]You see him and you think, 'Man, this guy makes a lot of plays,'” McVay added of Howell. “He does a lot of really impressive things, both on and off the schedule. And you can see why the people and players in this organization believe in him so much. He's put a lot of really good stuff on tape and he's certainly dangerous as hell.
From Thursday afternoon chance checker placed the Rams as 6.5-point favorites against the Commanders. At the same time ESPN Football Power Index gave Los Angeles a 41.4% chance of making the playoffs.
