To erase the bitter memories of a tough previous defeat, Cignal overcame Farm Fresh, 25-10, 25-14, 25-15, in the PVL All-Filipino Conference on Thursday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Jov Gonzaga showed their lead with 17 points built around 14 attacks, two aces and a block to help the HD Spikers improve to a 5-2 record and form a three-way tie with Petro Gazz and Chery Tiggo – all still in the dispute for the final Four places.

“The ones we worked on a lot before Holy Week and after applying ourselves really well,” said Cignal coach Shaq delos Santos. “The only challenge for us is how we can maintain it throughout the game.

“I'm very proud of the team because they really committed to performing well, especially Jov (Gonzaga), his leadership was great at the beginning of the court, we can hear the communication and it shows in the performance.”

Team captain Ces Molina had 11 points, including four aces to Cignal's 10 total, and Vanie Gandler contributed 10 points, all on attacks.

The All-Filipino Conference's top setter, Gel Cayuna, powered the HD Spikers with 18 excellent sets as Cignal took advantage of Farm Fresh's lackluster net and ground defense.

Cignal was heartbroken before the break by Creamline, who completed a reverse sweep, 26-28, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 16-14, behind Tots Carlos' historic 38 points to come away with the victory .

Knowing the importance of every victory they can get as the semi-finals approach, the HD Spikers decided to bounce back and eliminated the Foxies, who committed 14 errors.

“Because we thought the rest of our games were really crucial. I really thought I needed to be consistent because the team really needs me,” Gonzaga said.

“(In) today’s game, I really know that Farm Fresh is going to prepare really hard, and all the teams, you don’t have anything to worry about or anything. You really shouldn't be complacent,” she added.

Farm Fresh showed signs of life in the deciding frame and even led early before Roselyn Doria delivered three consecutive points for a 15-11 lead for Cignal.

And the HD Spikers never relinquished the lead as Gonzaga, Molina and Gandler unleashed an offensive onslaught on the hapless Foxies, who are now on the brink of elimination at 2-5.

“Our improvement is good because it’s just us all the time. The score was close, I think in the middle of the third set, but things were taken away”, said Delos Santos.

“It's always emphasized that (we) can give instructions, but at the same time, it's you who are going to actually move, it's you who are going to be defeated, it's you who will end up there with the mindset set. about the points that are necessary,” he said.

“One point at a time, but the effort is very intense to get the point,” he added.
