Patti Smith was hospitalized in Bologna, Italy, on Tuesday due to a sudden illness, according to an Italian media outlet. TGCOM24. The 76-year-old musician was in the city to perform a concert at Duse Theaterbut the venue shared an Instagram story announcing the show's cancellation.
“With great regret, we inform the kind public that Patti Smith's concert scheduled for today… will not be able to take place due to a sudden illness that has struck the artist,” the venue wrote in Italian.
Representatives for Smith did not immediately respond to Rolling Stonerequest for comment. TGCOM24 reported that the artist was discharged from Maggiore hospital, in Bologna, after medical evaluation. She was also active on Instagram earlier today, sharing an Instagram Story unrelated to the incident.
“We all regret the inconvenience caused by this news,” continued the venue’s representatives in their statement on social media. “Our best wishes to the artist for a speedy recovery.”
Smith's upcoming show in Venice on December 14 has also been cancelled, as has a book signing event in Milan scheduled for Friday, December 15. The shows were part of an eight-night tour of Italy, which began in November with shows in Ancona, Bari, Naples and Modena. Smith is still scheduled to perform in Chicago and Brooklyn later this month.
Earlier this year, Smith appeared as a surprise guest at the Music of Paul McCartney benefit concert held at New York's Carnegie Hall. She was not part of the official project, but appeared in the middle of the show to perform for the first time a version of the 1967 Beatles classic, “She's Leaving Home”.
