Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS), in a speech on Wednesday (13), asked the federal government to remove the Porto Alegre urban railway company (Trensurb) from the national privatization program (PND), which provides for a transfer from the company to the private sector. Trensurb is a federal state company operating since 1985 and connecting the capital of Rio Grande do Sul with the cities of Vales do Rio dos Sinos and Vale do Sapateiro, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre.

— This concession does not seem necessary or appropriate to us because Trensurb is a company that performs very well. A possible privatization would not bring operational benefits, on the contrary, it would bring to Rio Grande do Sul the enormous instability, insecurity and management problems that currently exist in regions where this transport has been entrusted to the private sector, he said.

Paim noted that Trensurb carries 120,000. people per day and has infrastructure and equipment capable of transporting up to 250,000. people per day, using clean and renewable energy.

— Awarding Trensurb to the private sector, as requested by the current government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, will not eliminate the need to maintain the subsidies that the federal government currently guarantees to the company. Concession without maintaining federal subsidies would result in unbearable rate increases for the user population, which would be disastrous.
