On Tuesday, the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, approved the application and immediate implementation of a new retirement age and length of service for the teaching profession, with the requirement that applications from interested officers ​must be accompanied by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) Certificate and License.

A circular from the Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Ayanleye Aina, further advised all those interested in taking advantage of the new retirement age to comply with the guidelines of having a medical fitness certificate obtained from a Public Hospital.

“Consequently, the Ministry of Finance and the State Directorate of Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) were instructed to immediately suspend the payment of salaries to those enjoying the new retirement age without complying with the attached conditions.”

The circular says the following:

“I would like to refer to our Circulars Ref. Nos. SMD.61/VOL.III/36 of May 31, 2022, and SMD.61/Vol.IV/52 of October 20, 2023, on the above subject and we reiterate that the conditions provided for in the aforementioned Circulars still exist. Consequently, all those who had been enjoying the new retirement age and length of service without meeting the necessary prerequisites, as per this Circular, no longer enjoyed such benefits until compliance with the existing Circulars.

“For the purpose of emphasis, so that any officer can take advantage of the new retirement age and length of service, the officer in question is requested to ensure that the guidelines are strictly adhered to.

“For the avoidance of doubt, a copy of the guidelines in reference is attached.

“Relevant ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of the government are requested to ensure wide circulation of this circular and strict compliance, the circular concluded.

Other guidelines, according to the circular, are:

“The officer must be medically fit as determined by a qualified physician.

“The officer should not be under any disciplinary action.

“Procedure: The eligible officer must register six months before reaching the age of 60 years or 35 years of service, whichever is earlier;

“The application must be endorsed by the eligible Director or Director of the Director and addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education;

“Application must be accompanied by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) Certificate and License and certificate of medical fitness obtained from a Government Hospital;

“Eligible candidates will be evaluated by a Committee to be created by the Office of the Chief of Service;

“All successful candidates will be posted to serve as teachers in schools;

“All unsuccessful candidates will be advised to retire immediately under the 60/35 Year Scheme;

“Documents required for registration:
Medical certificate of fitness issued by a Public Hospital.
Certificate of Registration issued by Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) License issued by TRCN.

Right of Appeal: Any applicant whose application is not accepted may appeal to the Office of the Head of Service, stating the grounds for the appeal and any supporting documents.

“Miscellaneous: Successful officers have the freedom to resign their service before completing 65 or 40 years of service;

“The existing service rules and regulations, except those dealing with age and length of service, are applicable to the successful Directors throughout the extension period.

“The extension period is not pensionable”, concluded the guidelines
