Oprah Winfrey has spoken candidly about how she has dealt with her mental health.
The 69-year-old talk show appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show on December 12, where he discussed his decision to opt out of third-party care. “I did all my therapy on the show in front of everyone,” she told Charlie's Angels star. “And you know, when I started in 1986 with the national program, no one was in therapy. Even talking about therapy on television was taboo, and now everyone has had therapy.”
“So I did my therapy in front of everyone, at a time when people were still adjusting their consciences to the idea of accepting that someone else could give you advice about your life,” she continued.
But after 25 seasons and countless segments encouraging and advocating for individuals to seek the help they need to improve their well-being, the celebrity has never attended a therapy session for herself. However, her strength and self-resilience continued to inspire others over the years. In fact, Barrymore confessed that Winfrey motivated her when she was a teenager, specifically when she was 14 years old.
The 48-year-old actress admitted: “I'm happy to say now that I don't think or feel any of those things about myself. I feel like I'm learning more here, not playing a character, but being myself.”
“And you made it okay for everyone. I think that’s partly why self-employment is such a national discussion springboard for you,” Barrymore added.
On December 6, Winfrey also opened up about the physical work she did for her well-being. Speaking with Entertainment tonight on the carpet for the premiere of The color purple in Los Angeles, the producer discussed her regular wellness regimen along with her recent weight loss.
“It’s not one thing, it’s everything,” she told the outlet. “I was on that treadmill today.”
Of her previous workout routine, Winfrey released details to The Hollywood Reporter in 2017. Between strict timeouts on certain machines and a timed cool-down period, Winfrey has remained consistent in her gym activities.
In the interview, she said: “I have a fantastic Octane elliptical machine which is like a strength motor – you can increase your stride length and arm movement.”
“I will do 20 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes walking on the treadmill. I start at the level 3 incline setting and every minute I add the incline until I get to 12 or 15. And then I do sit-ups,” Winfrey continued.
Although Winfrey dedicates a portion of her daily routine to exercise, she's not entirely in love with the entire fitness scene. “The problem with exercise is this: I still hate it a lot,” she confessed to Today in 2020. “I still do it. I think everyone is waiting to love it. You won't love it, but do what you need to do to feel complete and good.
