Angela Bassett and Robin Wright also star in Netflix's anti-fairy tale

Weird stuff' Millie Bobby Brown is entering another kind of Upside Down. At the Maiden trailer released Tuesday, Elodie, a disgraced princess, tries to survive an impossible fate.

After a maiden (Brown) agrees to marry a prince, her body is thrown into a cave that houses a fire-breathing dragon – the prince's family sacrifices her to pay off an important debt. The offering is a centuries-old tradition marked by “honor and duty,” as the trailer shares, and it becomes clear when Elodie runs her hand over the engraved names of previously distressed maidens. Brown trades her royal dress and gold-encrusted jewelry for a sword and climbing gear (made from her own hair) in an effort to escape the bowels of the monster's lair.

“This is not a fairy tale,” the trailer states.

Angela Basset (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) plays Elodie's stepmother, while Robin Wright (Forrest Gump) plays Elodie's new mother-in-law. “They may be royalty, but that doesn't make them good people,” says Elodie's stepmother in the trailer, establishing a rivalry between the maternal figures.

Nick Robinson (Jurassic World), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Star Trek Beyond), Ray Winstone (Those who left) and Brooke Carter (The peripheral) also joins the cast.

The film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazeau arrives on March 8.

“What I really loved about Dan Mazeau's script was embracing the idea of a fantasy adventure and a princess and dragon story, but taking it to a place (where) everything is completely upside down,” said Fresnadillo. Hill. “It was a very intense journey that I was very excited to design and develop. At its heart, this is a beautiful story about a young girl who becomes a strong, independent and powerful adult. Elodie has no support whatsoever. It’s a true survival experience.”
