Athletic Bilbao fan suffered cardiac arrest during the game

The match between Granada and Athletic Bilbao was stopped after 20 minutes due to the need for emergency medical attention for a fan in the stands. It was later revealed that he suffered cardiorespiratory arrest and passed away, which caused the referee and both teams to agree to postpone the game.

“LaLiga and both clubs agreed to cancel the match due to the death of a fan in Los Cármenes. Athletic Club expresses its deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with the person’s family and loved ones”, wrote Athletic Bilbao in “X”.

The goalkeeper of the Basque national team, Unay Simon, informed the referee of what had happened and the match was immediately stopped. Doctors from both clubs went to the scene to intervene, but moments later they returned to their benches while the spectator in question continued to be attended to by the doctor on duty.

After a few minutes of waiting and uncertainty, the two teams went to the changing room tunnel, following the referees' instructions.

At the time of the incident, Ernesto Valverde's team was winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Inaki Williams in the 6th minute.
