Gethin Jones opened up about his battle with depression and the end of his marriage to Katherine Jenkins.

The 45-year-old presenter was very candid about a particularly difficult time in his life, when he found himself suffering a “severe attack of depression”.

Describing being at the top of Mount Cook in New Zealand and “feeling very sad and depressed”, Gethin recalled how people were confused by his bad mood, but he was in a “rut” and couldn't understand why.

He was engaged to the Welsh singer, but after four years the pair split in 2011, with Katherine later claiming he was the one who initiated the split. Both posted statements saying they were heartbroken at the time.

Katherine and Gethin met on Strictly Come Dancing in 2009, when she sang and he was a partnered contestant with Flavia Cacace.

“I was engaged and then I broke up, or even during that period, it was just horrible,” Gethin said Tom Bryant on The Mirror's Outdoors in Mind podcast.

'I remember doing BBC Radio 5 Live and going to the bathroom at 5.30am and saying, “Okay. Let's go. Just focus on the next three hours and then you can go back to being sad again.” I definitely had a bad bout of depression at that time.

The Blue Peter star described how he wanted friends to tell him what to do, but now reflects that he put a lot of pressure on them when he had to sort things out himself.

While he didn't go into detail about his split from Katherine, he said it was a “horrible” time, continuing, “A lot of what I read about me wasn't right.”

He confessed to being proud that he never spoke about the split in public, but instead dealt with his emotions in therapy.

Reflecting on the smile and mindset of older generations, Gethin said that trying to do the same 'almost broke [him]'.

The star went on to recall how when his cameraman friend ended his life out of the blue, it had a “profound effect” on him.

Talking about recent times, Gethin reflected on the time he was unfairly accused on social media of being the anonymous BBC presenter who was suspended over allegations of inappropriate behaviour, and how this was “difficult” to read, and he was at a loss. what to do.

Gethin also openly revealed that he has always wanted to adopt a child, and this could happen in his future after seeing a friend do so.

The Welsh presenter began his career in children's TV on shows such as Popty, Mas Draw and Uned 5.

In April 2005, Gethin became a presenter on Blue Peter and this, along with his appearance on Strictly, shot him to fame.
