Taylor Swift stole the show at the 2024 Super Bowl. Specifically, her bold red lips.
On and off the field and stage, the American superstar has worn her signature look all season, including during her Eras tour and, most recently, to support her football player boyfriend, Travis Kelce.
The 34-year-old took the field after Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in Las Vegas. The pair kissed and hugged repeatedly in front of the cameras – their red lip perfectly intact.
Patrick Mahomes hit Mecole Hardman on a short pass with seconds left to secure the victory — and back-to-back Super Bowls — for Kansas City.
But much of the attention was focused on the couple in Las Vegas.
What red lipstick does Taylor Swift wear?
According to Hayley Walker, makeup artist and beauty expert at Just My Look, said Swift's “rich, bold, matte red” lip was a simple way to dress up a casual outfit.
“The shade is a bright red with hints of blue, complementing her blue eyes and fair skin. This specific red choice appears to be a subtle homage to the Kansas City Chiefs, as the red matches perfectly with the team's jerseys and completes their smart, casual game look,” said Walker.
Makeup artist Pat McGrath appeared to confirm on her Instagram Stories that the singer's red lip is from her 'MatteTrance' line, but did not reveal the name of the shade.
How can you recreate Taylor Swift's look?
Grace Day, esthetician and beauty editor at Beauty Bay, suggests “creating a precision line with a deep red liner and filling in the rest of the lip to create a base that won't budge.” Add your lipstick on top.”
She added: “I love the ELF Cosmetics O Face Satin lipstick in Me, Myself and I – and blot with tissue. Add a second layer to finish.”
Walker suggested scrubbing your lips to get rid of dry, flaky skin, using a lip primer and avoiding liner.
“For application, just swipe and go is not the answer to a kiss-proof lipstick. Layering lipstick and smudging it is the best way to ensure it stands the test of love,” she said.
“I would apply three coats of lipstick with a smudge in between to ensure it lasts and the color stays bold. Drying your lips helps retain moisture in your lips and creates a rich color.
“You can use a tissue to blot, however, I find that lipsticks can sometimes stick to fabric, especially long-wearing formulas, so I would recommend using blotting papers like Brushworks Charcoal Blotting Paper to remove excess tissue. lipstick oil that causes it to move.”
As a final step, Walker sets the product with clear powder to seal the look. “I love Eveline Cosmetics Wonder Match Translucent Setting Powder, I simply apply the product to a fluffy brush and lightly sweep it over my lips to set the lipstick,” she said.
“If I'm using a bolder color, I usually apply another layer of lip liner afterwards and do the same, but focus on the areas that are outlined. Next, I prep my lips with my concealer to give a plumped finish for a kiss-proof pout that lasts all day.
To achieve this classic look, Day believes matte red lipstick is a must.
“A matte lip can contain a lot of pigment, without the necessary maintenance of a gloss. It's also much less likely to smudge than a high-shine product. Taylor's aesthetic is very classic contemporary – taking iconic looks and giving them a cool, modern twist. One of the ways she updates her red lip is by keeping it completely matte,” Day said.
What are the common mistakes?
“Skipping the use of lip liner can make it difficult to define the natural shape of your lips during application, which can cause the lipstick to bleed or fade and result in a messy appearance,” says Walker.
“Another mistake is applying too much product, which can also leave the finish sloppy. To achieve bold, long-lasting color, I recommend applying three layers of lipstick with smudges in between. This method helps ensure the lipstick lasts, maintaining the vibrancy of the chosen shade.”
Choosing the wrong shade of red is also a common faux pas.
“For those with fair skin, like Taylor, who has cool undertones, blue-based reds provide a vibrant contrast without overpowering a fair complexion. Alternatively, for those with fair skin but warmer tones, opt for coral or cherry reds as they complement fair skin tones with yellow or peach undertones,” said Walker.
“Light to medium skin tones with cool undertones should stick to true reds or berry tones, as these colors can add a pop without being too harsh. Those with warm undertones should opt for brick reds or orange reds.
“Medium to olive skin tones with cool undertones should opt for deep reds or cranberry tones as these colors help bring out the richness of the complexion. For those with warm undertones in this category, try brick reds, terracotta, or warm brown-based reds.
Rich burgundies and wine reds can look stunning against dark skin with cool undertones, while deep cherry reds or brick reds perfectly complement darker skin with warmer tones, she said. “Just make sure your eye makeup stays simple, allowing your red lips to take center stage in your look.”
Day added: Once you get over the initial shock of the new look, I promise you'll feel confident enough to wear it.
