“The only one that could make me release the album a little later,” said Drake on new track “Red Button.”
Drake has released the third installment of his EP series, Scary hourson Friday, and left a surprise message in “Red Button” in an ode to Taylor Swift.
“Taylor Swift is the only n–– that I’ve ever rated / The only one that could make me abandon the album a little later” the artist rapped on the first track of disc two, following the line: “The rest of you, I treat you will like that I never made it / Leaving your label devastated / Even when you fill out the stats, period, I never hated.
Elsewhere in the song, Drake talks about Kanye: “Every time Yeezy calls a truce/He had my head inflated/Thinking that we’re finally going to calm things down and start levitating/I realized it was all premeditated.”
The duo has faced arguments with Kanye in the past. In a 2019 interview with Rolling Stoneaddressed the infamous VMA fiasco and his controversial 2016 track, “Famous,” which finds West singing “I feel like me and Taylor can still have sex.”
“(When I heard the song, I thought, ‘I’m done with this. If you want to be on bad terms, let’s be on bad terms, but be honest,” Swift said Rolling Stone. “And then he literally did the same thing to Drake. It severely affected the trajectory of Drake’s family and their lives. It’s the same thing. Get close to you, gain your trust, destroy you.”
Drake first released his Scary hours in 2018, with the two-track EP featuring “God’s Plan” and “Diplomatic Immunity,” while the three-song EP Scary Hours 2 arrived in 2021.
“I’ll tell you what: No… I don’t feel the need to appease anyone,” Drake said in an Instagram video before Scary hours‘ release. “I feel so confident about the job I just left that I know I can disappear for anything… six months, a year… two years.”
