AirPods Pro 2 USB-C

Apple/CNET

The AirPods Pro 2 with a USB-C charging case are almost identical to the AirPods Pro 2 that come with a Lightning case, except for one important feature. Those who purchase a Vision Pro headset will benefit from lossless audio when connecting these headphones, although this is likely an extreme case. It's still worth knowing, especially if Apple adds the same feature to future iPhones and other hardware.

Apple's first full-size headphones are packed with cutting-edge features like noise cancellation, spatial audio, and easy integration with Apple devices. Yes, paying about the same as you would for a PS5 may seem excessive, but here's the thing: they really are worth it, as long as you don't feel shortchanged by the lack of support for fully lossless audio.

Beats Studio Buds Plus have significantly improved performance Beats Studio Buds Plus have significantly improved performance

David Carnoy/CNET

Unfortunately, for those who purchased the original Beats Studio Buds, I'm sorry to report that these new Plus buds have been significantly improved, with better sound, noise cancellation, and battery life. Plus, they now offer top-notch voice calling performance.

The transparent version is attracting a lot of attention (who doesn't like transparent electronics?), but the big changes are on the inside. Beats claims that 95% of the components are new and improved, and the “acoustic architecture” of the buds has been revised. The speaker drivers remain the same, but the Studio Buds Plus are powered by a new, more powerful custom chipset and feature three new microphones in each bud that are three times larger and more sensitive than those found on the Beats Studio Buds. . You can save $20 on Amazon, and this deal also comes with two free years of Apple Care Plus.

The Beats Fit Pro is built on the same technology platform as the AirPods Pro. Unlike Beats' previous, cheaper Studio Buds, the Beats Fit Pro includes Apple's H1 chip and has most of the features of the original AirPods Pro, including noise cancellation. active noise, spatial audio and adaptive equalizer. I dare call them the sporty AirPods you've always wanted. And for some people, they might be better than the AirPods Pro.

Which AirPods are right for you?

Apple's wireless audio lineup now includes five AirPods models, and choosing the right set will depend on the features you're interested in and the price you're willing to pay. The 2019 second-generation AirPods are the cheapest option, while the current third-generation AirPods feature better sound quality with spatial audio. Meanwhile, the AirPods Pro 2, which feature active noise cancellation and transparency modes, are Apple's most advanced headphones yet and the first to feature Apple's new H2 chip. The luxurious AirPods Max, by far the most expensive of the bunch, are Apple's over-ear headphones and come with cutting-edge features, albeit without an H2 chip.

Along with the Apple-branded AirPods, it's worth considering some Beats-branded headphones that also incorporate Apple-made technology for a similarly smooth experience. This includes Beats Fit Pro, which uses Apple's H1 chip for fast, reliable connections and a sporty design for running or being active. The Beats Studio Buds don't have the H1 chip and stem of the AirPods, but they're lightweight, comfortable, and affordable. Likewise, the updated Beats Studio Buds Plus don't have an H1 chip, but they do feature one-tap pairing with Apple (and Android) devices, plus Find My support.

Except for the base AirPods 2, all AirPods listed above (plus Beats models) are compatible with Apple Spatial Audio Features. However, none of them will provide maximum quality of Apple Lossless Audio Formatwhich is too rich for the current Bluetooth wireless standard.
