MANILA, Philippines — Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced that law enforcement is addressing the murder of lawyer Maria Saniata Alzate, who was fatally shot by unidentified assailants in Abra on Thursday.
In a statement released Saturday, Bersamin indicated that hot pursuit operations are currently underway and urged the public to remain alert.
“We will ensure that our law enforcement agencies will work relentlessly to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous act. Hot pursuit operations are already ongoing, and we call upon our citizens to remain vigilant,” said Bersamin.
He denounced Alzate’s killing, labeling her death a significant loss for both the province and the legal community.
“We join our colleagues in the legal field in condemning the killing of Atty. Alzate, who was brutally shot outside her residence on the afternoon of 14 September 2023. […] Her passing is not only a tragedy for the province of Abra but also for the legal profession,” he said.
Additionally, the Philippine National Police has established a special investigative team to delve deeper into the incident.
