MANILA, Philippines – Near Verde Island in Batangas province, a ship and a barge collided, resulting in the injury of a male passenger, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Wednesday.

The marine accident happened on Tuesday between the barge Krizza Rica and the MV Fastcat M19, about two nautical miles southeast of Barangay San Agapito in Verde Island, according to PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilo .

The barge Krizza Rica was loaded with 300 bags of cement and had 17 crew on board, while the MV Fastcat M19 had 41 passengers on board, he added.

The PCG official also said that the passenger ship suffered damage to the right rear part, while the barge had scratches on the left front part.

Balilo also revealed that the injured 26-year-old passenger “suffered lacerations to his upper right eye and upper right lip, with minor bruises” due to the incident.

As of 3am on Wednesday, the MV Fastcat M19 was docked at Calapan Port in Oriental Mindoro where all passengers disembarked safely.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office in Calapan transported the injured passenger to Oriental Mindoro Provincial Hospital for further medical assistance.

The PCG, however, carried out an initial assessment of the oil spill in the accident area, which produced a negative result.

The Green Island Passage is known as the “center of global coastal fish biodiversity” due to the high densities of marine resources in the area. It is a 1.14 million hectare marine ecosystem located off the coasts of the provinces of Batangas, Romblon, Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro.
