TACLOBAN CITY – Several areas in northern Samar, including the provincial capital of Catarman, were hit by major flooding on Tuesday due to continuous rain generated by a low pressure area and shear line.

In Catarman, at least 1,263 people were evacuated after their homes were flooded, a report from the municipal information office said.

The number of affected families was expected to increase, as some were still trapped in their homes due to flooding, said Rachel Arnaiz, municipal information chief.

Arnaiz said data collection was difficult because power had been out since Monday night.

“This is the worst flooding incident in Catarman in almost five decades,” Arnaiz said.

Classes and work in Catarman have been canceled since Monday.

Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan offered the provincial gymnasium to Catarman residents who need to be evacuated.
