Regarding my old post about “Council Sub-Decree Expected To Push Bird Reserve Forward” that draft submitted for to build the hectares of land to reserve the birds, it is now approved.

The Council of Minster of Friday adopted a draft sub-decree creating a preserve on 217 hectare of richly vegetated Kompot province grassland to protect endangered cranes, forestry official said.

Me Phymean, director of the Forestry Administration’s wildlife protection department, said Sunday that the preserve in eventually become an ecotourism area where visitors could catch a glimpse of the rare red-headed Sarus crane, which number just 815 in Cambodia.

“It is an area where cranes can feed, and we need to conserve it,” Mr Phymean said, adding that there were already two other, larger crane preserve in Banteay Meanchey and Takeo provinces.

He said official would demarcate the new preserve clearly and establish an office there t work on conservation projects. [Read full article…]
