Sambo - the elephant in Wat Phnom Phnom Penh’s longtime resident elephant, 52 years old, has retired after 30 years of strolling along the riverside and providing rides to tourist at Wat Phnom, according to a statement posted by City Hall on its website.

“The municipality sees that Sambo is now very old and sick. We decided that she should retire,” said Som Chanren, deputy director of the municipality’s tourism department. He added that the city is now looking for a replacement elephant. [Read full article…]
